Cross sell flow teardown.
A cross sell flow suggests products that pair with what a customer already bought. It triggers on Placed Order or Fulfilled Order for specific products, waits until they have used the item, and shows a small set of complementary items. Relevance drives results, not volume of recommendations.
Trigger and filters.
Ordered Product for a defined category, with a delay after fulfilment. Build the logic around product pairs you can justify.
- Flow filter: has not bought the suggested items since the order
- Trigger filter: order contained a qualifying core product
- Flow filter: not in the post purchase review step, to avoid stacking asks
- Trigger filter: suggested items are in stock
Sequence and timing.
1. Delay after fulfilment (10 days)
Allow time for delivery and first use.
2. Email one: goes well with (At the end of the delay)
Present two or three items that complement the purchase.
3. Email two: how others use it (5 days later)
Show a bundle or routine, using content and not a sale.
4. Email three: still curious (1 week later)
Offer a free delivery threshold or small incentive for the non responders.
Branch logic.
- Conditional split on product category so each core product has its own pairings
- Split on whether the customer clicked email one, with clickers moving to a stronger prompt
- Split on basket size, nudging smaller orders towards the free delivery threshold
Copy outline.
Goes well with
Reference the original purchase, explain the pairing in one sentence, show items with images.
Routine or bundle
Outline a simple usage routine and link the bundle.
Still curious
Short reminder and delivery threshold information.
What to watch.
- Second item attach rate for each core product
- Revenue per recipient against the general post purchase flow
- Click distribution across recommended items, to refine pairings
- Return rate of cross sold items
Common mistakes.
- Relying on automatic recommendations without checking they make sense
- Sending before delivery has happened
- Showing items the customer already owns
- Pushing a discount when the pairing is the real reason to buy
This is a starting structure, not a promise of results. Timing and offers depend on your product, your repurchase window and your list, so test and adjust.
