What is Cross-sell email?
A cross-sell email recommends products that go well with something a customer has already bought, rather than repeating the same item.
It usually sits inside a post-purchase flow after delivery, once the customer has had time to use the first item. Relevance is the point, so recommendations should match the product bought, not simply the best sellers.
Product data matters. Clear categories, tags and a reliable catalog feed make it possible to pair items logically, such as a case with a device or a refill with a starter kit.
Timing matters as much as the content. Sending before the order arrives feels pushy, while sending after the customer has tried the product reads as helpful.
A worked example.
Imagine a hypothetical bike accessories store. A customer buys a helmet, and a few weeks after delivery receives an email about lights and a lock, with a short note on how riders usually kit out a commuter bike.
Common mistakes.
- Recommending the item the customer just bought
- Sending while the order is still in transit
- Pairing products with no logical link
