What is Dark mode email?
Dark mode is a display setting that shows light content on dark backgrounds, and email clients may change an email's colours to match.
Logos with white boxes, dark text on transparent images and low-contrast buttons can become unreadable. Test every email in dark mode before sending.
Use transparent PNG logos with a light outline, avoid text baked into images, and choose colours that keep their contrast when inverted.
A worked example.
A brand's black logo on a transparent background disappears when an email client inverts colours. It replaces the logo with a version that has a thin light outline, and tests every new email in dark mode before sending.
Common mistakes.
- Dark logos on transparent backgrounds
- Text stored inside images
- Never testing dark mode
