How to set up a customer thank-you flow in Klaviyo
A thank-you flow is a short, warm follow up sent after a customer places their first order. In Klaviyo you trigger on placed order, filter to first-time buyers, wait for the order to ship, and send a plain thank you that invites a reply or feedback instead of pushing another sale.
Have this ready.
- Order events syncing into Klaviyo
- A real reply to address that someone reads
- A short note in your brand voice, ideally from a named person
- A decision on whether to include a question or survey link
Steps.
1. Trigger on placed order
Create a flow on the placed order metric so every new order starts the sequence.
2. Limit to first-time buyers
Add a flow filter for people with exactly one order. Returning customers can get a different, shorter note or be excluded.
3. Add a short delay
Wait a day or two so the message does not collide with the order confirmation, which is a transactional email sent by your store.
4. Write the note
Open with thanks, say what happens next in a sentence, and keep the tone personal. Use one person as the sender if you can.
5. Invite a reply
Ask a single easy question, such as what made them choose you. Replies teach you why people buy and tell mail providers the sender is wanted.
6. Keep selling light
Add at most one soft link, such as care tips or how to reach support. Save product recommendations for the post-purchase flow.
7. Check against other flows
Review timing alongside post-purchase and review flows so a new buyer does not receive three messages in one day.
Common pitfalls.
- Repeating the order confirmation instead of adding something new.
- Sending from a no-reply address, which blocks the replies you want.
- Heavy discounting that teaches customers to wait for offers.
- Overlapping with the post-purchase flow on the same day.
Check it worked.
- Only first-time buyers enter
- Reply address is monitored
- Timing does not clash with other flows
- Links and images load on mobile
- Email status is live
Klaviyo changes its interface from time to time, so treat the steps as the order of work and match the names to what you see on screen.
