What is VIP segment?
A VIP segment is a group of your most valuable customers, defined by measures such as total spend, order count or consistent recent purchasing.
The definition should fit your business. A store with frequent low-value orders might use order count, while one with rare large purchases might use total spend. Review the thresholds periodically so the group stays meaningful.
VIPs respond well to recognition rather than discounts: early access, previews, personal notes or exclusive products. Discounting your best customers can reduce margin on sales that would have happened anyway.
Also watch for VIPs who go quiet. A message to a lapsing high-value customer is often worth more attention than one to a casual buyer.
A worked example.
Imagine a hypothetical jewelry store defining VIPs as customers with several orders in the past year. Before each launch they get a preview link a day early, and one who has gone quiet is sent a short note from the founder.
Common mistakes.
- Using a threshold that never updates
- Discounting VIPs by default
- Ignoring VIPs who stop buying
