What is Reply-to address?
A reply-to address is the email address that receives a reply when a subscriber hits reply, and it can be different from the address the message was sent from.
Most marketing email is sent from a no-reply style address on a sending subdomain, while the reply-to points at a mailbox a person actually reads. The from address is what the receiving server checks for authentication. The reply-to is only used when the reader responds.
Replies matter because they are a positive signal. A recipient who writes back is clearly engaged, and many mailbox providers treat conversation as a sign that the sender is wanted. A dead address that bounces replies throws that signal away and annoys customers with a question.
Keep the reply-to on a domain you control and monitor. Route it to a shared support inbox, and decide who answers delivery questions, order queries and the occasional angry message.
A worked example.
A hypothetical tea shop sends from hello@mail.example.com but sets the reply-to to care@example.com. A customer replies asking to change a delivery address, and the support team answers the same day. The shop later notices that a few readers reply to each campaign with product questions, which it turns into content for the next send.
Common mistakes.
- Using a no-reply address that bounces or is never checked
- Pointing replies at a personal mailbox that one person forgets to watch
- Setting a reply-to on a different, unrelated domain that looks odd to filters
