What is Inbox placement test?

An inbox placement test sends a message to a panel of test mailboxes at different providers to see whether it lands in the inbox, a tabbed view, the spam folder or nowhere.

Tools provide a set of addresses at providers such as Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo. You send your real campaign to them and the report shows where each copy ended up, often with a summary of authentication results.

It is a useful early warning. A drop in placement can show a problem before engagement metrics fall. It is only a sample, though, and test mailboxes have no history with you, so real subscribers may see different results.

Use it alongside other signals such as postmaster data, complaint rates and click trends. Treat it as one reading on a dial and not a final verdict on your deliverability.

A worked example.

A hypothetical outdoor gear brand runs a placement test before a big seasonal send. The report shows the test copy going to spam at one provider while others reach the inbox. The team checks its authentication and a broken image link, fixes both, and retests before mailing the full list.

Common mistakes.
