What is Unsubscribe rate?
Unsubscribe rate is the percentage of recipients who opt out of your list after receiving an email.
Some unsubscribing is healthy, because it removes people who would never buy and who might otherwise mark you as spam. A sudden spike after one campaign is the thing to investigate.
Look at which segment and which email caused it. Often the fix is better targeting or lower frequency, not a different design.
A worked example.
One Friday campaign draws far more opt-outs than usual. The team finds it went to everyone, including recent buyers of the featured product. A suppression rule for recent buyers solves it for the next sale.
Common mistakes.
- Treating every unsubscribe as a failure
- Hiding the link so people complain instead
- Mailing the same offer to everyone regardless of interest
