Klaviyo vs Mailchimp for Ecommerce: Which Should You Use?
A practical comparison of Klaviyo and Mailchimp for online stores: data, automation, segmentation and when each one makes sense.
For most ecommerce stores that rely on email for repeat revenue, Klaviyo is the stronger fit, because it is built around store data: what people browsed, added to cart and bought. Mailchimp can still suit very small lists, simple newsletters and stores that want a lighter, cheaper tool. Which one is right depends on how much you want email to drive revenue.
We work mostly in Klaviyo, so we have a view. This comparison tries to be fair, and you should check each vendor's current features and pricing yourself, because both change.
The short version
| Question | Klaviyo | Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Built around store data | Yes, deep ecommerce integration | Integrates, but historically broader marketing tool |
| Segmenting by behaviour | A core strength | Available, often less granular |
| Flows and automation | Extensive, ecommerce-first | Capable, simpler |
| Best for | Stores where email is a revenue channel | Small lists and simple newsletters |
Treat the table as a guide, not a spec sheet.
Store data and segmentation
The biggest difference is how each tool uses what your store knows. Klaviyo is built to take events such as viewed product, added to cart and placed order, and let you build segments and triggers from them. That is what makes flows like abandoned cart and browse recovery work well.
Mailchimp can connect to stores and use purchase data too, but ecommerce has not always been its centre of gravity. If you want precise segments, such as people who viewed a product twice and did not buy, Klaviyo tends to make that easier. See our note on email segmentation.
Flows and automation
Both tools run automated emails. Klaviyo's flow builder is designed around the lifecycle moments a store cares about: welcome, cart recovery, post-purchase, replenishment and winback. If those flows are the point, the depth matters.
For a simple welcome email and a monthly newsletter, either tool will do.
Reporting
What matters is revenue attributed to email, not opens. Klaviyo's reporting leans toward revenue and ecommerce metrics. Check that whichever tool you pick can show you attributed revenue by flow and campaign, since that is how you decide what to keep.
Cost
Both price by list size, and both change plans over time. Do not decide on the sticker price alone. A cheaper tool that earns less revenue costs more in the end. Compare what each costs at your current list size and what it can earn.
When Mailchimp makes sense
- Your list is small and you mostly send occasional newsletters.
- You are not yet running flows and want to start simply.
- Budget is the main constraint and email is not yet a core channel.
When Klaviyo makes sense
- Email or SMS is meant to drive a meaningful share of revenue.
- You want behaviour-based segments and a full lifecycle of flows.
- You are ready to invest in design and ongoing optimisation.
Switching
Moving platforms is mostly about the list, the flows and the sending domain. Plan the migration so authentication carries over and your reputation is protected, and rebuild the key flows before turning the old ones off. Our guide to SPF, DKIM and DMARC covers the domain side.
